The year-long research project can take on a variety of forms—a scholarly paper, narrative nonfiction essay, journalistic article or series of articles, documentary film, or museum exhibition. It is designed to reflect your personal interests and career goals.
The university has named several buildings, scholarships, and academic programs in his honor, including the Hesburgh Library, the Hesburgh Institute for International Studies, which Hesburgh founded in 1985, the Hesburgh-Yusko Scholarship, and the Hesburgh International Scholar Experience.
These include the Hesburgh-Yusko Scholarship at the University of Notre Dame, the Huntsman Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, the Morehead-Cain Scholarship at the University of North Carolina, the Robertson Scholarship at both the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and Duke University, and several others.
Each year, out of approximately 1.6 million entrants, only 7,500 students receive National Merit Scholarship awards. Winners are chosen from a Finalist group based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments, including academic record, test scores, written recommendations, activities and leadership, and a personal essay.
